Lab safety rules

  1. Safety is our highest priority. Stop work immediately if a task, tool, or condition appears unsafe.
  2. Report every fire and any fire extinguisher use to Cornell Emergency Dispatch immediately, even if the fire is already out.
  3. Keep the lab door closed. Never prop it open.
  4. Closed-toe shoes are required at all times in the lab.
  5. Use equipment only for its intended purpose and only after receiving any required training or authorization. For help, contact the Maker Lab President or a lab manager.
  6. Equipment may not leave the lab without approval from the Maker Lab President. Unauthorized removal will be considered theft.
  7. Wear any additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, hearing protection, and eye protection, as needed. If the lab is missing PPE you need, ask a lab manager to purchase it.
  8. Never operate high-voltage equipment alone. Verify voltage and power ratings on all components and equipment before applying power.
  9. Approved eye protection is required for you and anyone nearby when soldering, using hand tools, or running drones, motors, or anything with fast-moving parts or flying debris.
  10. Assume tools and work surfaces may be contaminated with lead or other hazardous materials. Wash your hands after handling equipment and before eating or drinking.

General rules

  1. Include your NetID in the file name of every print. Prints without one will be canceled and discarded.
  2. Remote printing is prohibited. Start prints only from the lab computer or an approved SD card.
  3. Do not touch, modify, or take anything from anyone else’s project.
  4. Store all projects on the designated project shelf, in a white project box (if it fits), or in a project cubby with permission. Unattended projects, items, or components may (and likely will) be discarded if left scattered in the workspace. See Project Storage.
  5. Keep work areas tidy and clean up after your project before leaving the lab. Leaving a mess may result in suspension or termination of membership.
  6. Food and beverages are prohibited in active work areas. They may be consumed only in a designated clean area.
  7. Turn off equipment when it is not in use.
  8. Report unsafe behavior or conditions immediately. If it is safe to do so, stop the activity and notify a lab manager. Silence supports unsafe activity.
  9. Failure to follow these rules may result in loss of card access to the lab.
